Walnut Pecan: know a little about this tree!



Pecan walnut is native to Mexico and the United States, being classified as a tree (large) can reach more than 40 meters in height and its trunk on average 2 meters in diameter. It is a monoecious tree, since it has male and female flowers that have differences in the maturation period, the male ones mature before the female ones. It has drupe type fruits that are grouped at the end of the branches. Introduced in Brazil around 1870 and being able to live for about 200 years, it became a culture exploited economically, mainly in Rio Grande do Sul, Santa Catarina and Paraná.


Factors that determined the quality of the walnut and fruit:

- The walnut tree originates from a temperate climate, it grows from humid to arid climates without difficulty;

- Excess and lack of water can cause the plant to die;

- Likes a fertile, deep and low pH soil;

- The soil for planting the walnut tree must be prepared at least 3 months before planting, leaving 10 meters of space between one plant and another;

- The planting must be carried out in the winter (from June to August);

- Drip irrigation is a great option; - Organic fertilization favors its development;

- Choosing the right cultivars is essential.

Its fruits can be eaten raw, roasted, caramelized ... finally, in various ways, all extremely tasty and nutritious!
